Story/Writing

The atmospheric introduction of Gumaa #3 is dark and damp, immediately capturing your attention and setting the tone flawlessly. In his latest installment, Jeehyung Lee propels Khalida's arc forward and lays the groundwork for an upcoming revenge plot. The neat flow created by the author makes the comic a delightful read. Plus, there’s the perk of Jeehyung Lee mapping out his own panel layouts for the comic.

Without having read the previous two issues, readers can still grasp the main idea of what happened before. Lee's script effectively includes the necessary character background cues, making sure new readers are not excluded. The writing won’t leave readers overwhelmed as they are brought up to speed and enjoy the dagger-slaying tale progression.

The most intense moment in the dialogue occurred when Manuel and Khalida confronted each other. By making the voice emerge from the pages, he adds context and imbues the character with great vitality. Playing well off of Khalida deadpan look and dialogue delivery.

The outcome will vary based on the content and execution of the complete story. Gumma may come to be Titan Comics’ sleeper hit on the current release roster.

Art

The cooperative work on the penciled illustrations is sharp and commands attention. The artwork stands apart with its distinctive character designs, the portrayal of a diverse range of intense emotions, and its skillful use of minimal action to deliver a strong and resonant impact. The skillful execution of bold coloring that doesn't overshadow the intricate pencil work showcases the mastery of this creative team. The only imperfection in the artwork is a small hiccup in removing a dialogue bubble. Otherwise, the art in this comic is superb.

Gumaa: The Beginning of Her #3 is out digitally and physically on February 7th!
